Holiday Programming Preview: The Gifts that Keep Giving

(All Times Eastern) – I declare “too soon." The Autumn equinox just passed and I’ve already spotted holiday merchandise for sale at some local stores. While I think retail giants create a false need for holiday merchandise way too early, there is the notion that this is people’s most favorite time of the year, so why not? This couldn’t be more obvious with the overwhelming amount of holiday programming coming to screens everywhere this fall. These network gifts begin in about a month with the premiere of two huge holiday franchises and continue through the end of the year.


It’s a Wonderful Lifetime kicks off the holiday season on Lifetime Friday, October 25 at 8:00 pm. With 28 premiere movies this season, Lifetime will have its largest holiday movie slate ever. Click the image for a full list of all the holiday offerings coming to Lifetime this season.


It wouldn't be the holiday season without Hallmark Channel’s Countdown to Christmas event. The 2019 Hallmark holiday movie schedule officially kicks off on October 26, with its first movie, Christmas Wishes & Mistletoe Kisses. It's all part of Hallmark's 10th anniversary celebration of the franchise! Twenty-four brand-new holiday movies will debut on the channel from late October all the way until Christmas. 25 days is just not enough time to watch all our favorite movies, so how about two full months of festive viewing to keep you jolly this holiday season? The celebrations begin on November 1 on Freeform with Kickoff to Christmas and continues December 1 when 25 Days of Christmas takes over. Even better is the fact that for the first time ever on cable TV, 25 Days of Christmas will include Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Frosty the Snowman, which are normally staples of the broadcast nets. AMC Networks has viewers covered this holiday season as the second annual Best Christmas Ever returns with its largest slate of holiday programming to-date, featuring over 60 films and specials airing all day, every day. Beginning Monday, November 25 through Christmas Day, the monthlong programming event will offer up more than 700 hours of holiday-themed movies, specials and family favorite films. They will be the exclusive home to many holiday favorites including Elf, The Polar Express, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, Miracle on 34th Street (’94), Four Christmases, Fred Claus and Rankin-Bass Christmas classics including The Year Without a Santa Claus, ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas, Jack Frost, and Rudolph’s Shiny New Year, among many others. It’s hard to think there will be more holiday programming, but everyone wants some of the action. FX will present a three-night adaptation of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. TBS and TNT will once again air the classic movie A Christmas Story for 24 hours beginning December 24 at 8:00 pm. Food Network has revealed that they will have plenty cooking for the holidays, with 40% more seasonal episodes planned overall in 2019 versus last year. Over 100 hours of holiday programming is slated through the end of the year with shows such as Ultimate Thanksgiving Challenge, Holiday Baking Championship, Holiday Wars and holiday themed weekend marathons. HGTV will offer up some specials like A Very Brady Renovation: Holiday Edition, Outrageous Holiday Houses and White House Christmas 2019.
